Calling on the people of Kildare! 30

Posted on February 21, 2011 by EmerMcC

We’re giving away five €10.00 vouchers for simply telling us:

What takeaway in Kildare you would love to see on JustEat.ie and why? (Remember the takeaway/restaurant must operate a delivery service)

Cut and pasting from directory sites is a BIG *no no* so please don’t do it or your answer will be null and void.

To enter simply post your suggestion below & don’t forget to tell us why you want to see your chosen takeaway on JustEat.ie. Here is an example of an answer: Joe’s Takeaway in Newbridge because I love their chips & by having them on JustEat saves me money on phoning them!

PS – We have something very special planned for Kildare.

Winners will be selected at random on 23rd Feb 2011 at 4pm. For further information please check out our Facebook page.

The winners are

Sarah Corcoran, Gareth Fletcher, Mandy Dowson, Shauna Riordan and Toni o’ Rourke! Congrats. Please email emer@just-eat.ie to claim your €10 voucher :) .

Treats to beat the January blues 0

Posted on January 11, 2011 by EmerMcC

11 January 2011: The Irish are choosing to cheer themselves up this January rather than stick to strict New Year resolutions, as Just-Eat.ie, the Ireland’s largest online takeaway ordering service, has seen a 30% rise in weekend takeaway orders during the beginning of the month, compared to an average weekend.

More customers are also searching for healthier options, so Just-Eat has teamed up with nutritionist Carina Norris to provide hints and tips as to the best takeaway orders to choose if you’re counting your calories:

1) Indian: Go for oven-cooked Tandoori and Tikka dishes (not Tikka massala which comes with a rich sauce), rather than curries. If you do have a curry, choose one with a tomato-based sauce like a rogan josh, rather than a creamy korma.  Save extra calories by having a chapatti rather than naan, and boiled rice rather than pilau.

2) Chinese: Avoid deep-fried starters like prawn toasts, prawn crackers and spring rolls. As with Indian, have boiled or steamed rice rather than fried. Run a mile from anything involving ‘ribs’, as it will be high in saturated fat, calories and probably sugar.

3) Thai: Thai is generally a very healthy cuisine. Steamed dishes, especially fish, are healthier than those that are fried.  Watch out for the peanuts, which feature highly in Thai recipes – they’re high in fat and often salt.

4) Pizza: Always have a thin and crispy base rather than deep-pan or stuffed-crust. And ask for the maximum amount of vegetables (full of vitamins and fibre) in your topping; tomatoes are particularly nutritious, and cooking them makes the nutrients easier to absorb. Finally, go easy on the cheese, to cut your intake of saturated fat and salt.

5) Fish and Chips: Choose fish in crumbs rather than batter and – if you can – leave some of the coating. Go for the smallest portion of chips or, even better, have baked beans or mushy peas instead. All this will help keep the fat content down.

6) Avoid anything deep fried where possible, as it will be high in fat. Stir-fried dishes are better as they involve less oil, but best of all are those that are baked, grilled, braised or steamed.

7) Many Indian, Thai and Chinese dishes contain spices with healthy properties, such as turmeric, ginger and chilli. These can help fight colds and flu, but still remember to check what sauce they come in.

8 ) Chicken, turkey and fish are lower in fat (especially saturated fat) than red meats like beef and lamb. Avoid duck if you’re trying to be low-fat.

9) Vegetarian dishes based around pulses (beans and lentils) are often the most healthy. As well as being low in fat, pulses are high in fibre, which is good for your digestive system and extra-filling too.

10) If you have chips, choose thick ones rather than thin-cut French fries. Chunky chips have less surface area exposed to the frying oil, so they soak up less of it.

Healthy Option 1 Healthy Option 2
Indian Chicken Tikka with half a Naan Bread = 390 calories Dhakla (Lentil dish) with half a Naan Bread = 335 calories
Chinese Lemon Chicken with Steamed Rice = 210 calories Mushroom Chow Mein and a Vegetable Spring Roll = 250 calorie
Pizza Two slices of Thin Base Pepperoni Pizza (medium) with half a Garlic Bread and Salad (no dressing) = 380 calories Two slices of Cheese and Tomato Pizza (medium size) with half a portion of Potato Wedges and Salad (no dressing) = 410 calories

New Year Takes off with Takeaway 0

Posted on January 06, 2011 by EmerMcC

Just-Eat

Latest figures from Just-Eat.ie, Ireland’s number one online food ordering website reveal that New Year’s Day was the most popular day of the whole year for ordering a takeaway. A record 50% more orders were made on New Year’s Day than any other day of the year.

“Ordering usually spikes during bank holidays and New Year’s Day 2011 was no exception. I think a few factors make New Years Day the most popular day for ordering takeaway – many people are chilling out from New Years Eve celebrations and most people couldn’t look at another turkey sandwich. A delicious takeaway is a welcome reprieve from the traditional Christmas leftovers. This year healthier options like Thai, Indian and Mexican were much more popular.” said Emer McCormack, Marketing Manager at Just-Eat.ie.

Telly and a Takeaway

As the bills roll in after the Christmas splurge it’s no surprise that people will opt for a night in front of the box with their favourite takeaway – it seems the telly and a takeaway is back in vogue.

Figures from Just-Eat.ie show a new trend where people are ordering takeaway while watching their favourite TV programme. Viewer numbers and takeaway orders spike correspondingly for popular TV programmes like The Late Late Show, The All Ireland Talent Show and Coronation Street.

“People order takeaway twice a week on average and although Sunday is the most popular day for ordering, as most of us are in chill out mode, I won’t be surprised to see a weekday becoming the most popular for ordering takeaway in January.” said Emer McCormack. “At the moment Monday and Tuesday are the most popular with bargain hunters as the most special offers and meal deals are ordered on these days.”

Treats for Tallaght as €5 Comes to Town

Latest figures from Just-Eat.ie show that Tallaght residents order twice as much takeaway than anywhere else in the country. The most popular days for ordering takeaway in Tallaght are Friday and Saturday with an Indian curry the most popular cuisine.

“Tallaght has one of the biggest (64,227) and youngest populations in the country and a sizeable student population. This demographic typically lead a busy, on-the-go lifestyle so it’s unsurprising that there are increased demand for takeaways. We’re delighted to offer the €5 Feast in Tallaght for the month of January with a huge range of choice from Indian to traditional Irish to Italian.” said Emer McCormack.
